Before you get carried away by colours, fat tyres or a sharp-looking frame, use this electric bike pre-purchase checklist to work out what will genuinely suit your rides - from the school run and café stop to the commute, beach path or trip to the shops.
The right choice is rarely about buying the biggest spec sheet. It is about buying the bike you will actually want to ride often.
Start with the rides you want to replace
Think about the last few short car trips you made. Was it a five-minute dash for milk, a run to the station, a visit to a mate, or the daily commute where parking costs more than the coffee? These are the trips an eBike can make feel lighter, quicker and far more enjoyable.
Be honest about your regular route. Flat coastal paths call for something different from steep suburban streets, windy regional roads or a longer commute through Melbourne traffic. Consider the distance of a normal return journey, the hills involved, where you can park, and whether you will be carrying a backpack, groceries or work gear.
Also think beyond weekdays. A bike that gets you to work but feels uncomfortable on a Saturday ride can end up gathering dust. The sweet spot is usually a model that fits your everyday transport needs and still makes you keen for a casual cruise.

Consider the bike’s real-world weight

A heavier bike may be perfectly manageable if it stays on the ground floor and you ride straight out the front door. It is a different story if you face stairs each day. Think through that moment before buying, not after the delivery arrives.
Test the controls, not just the seat
The display, assistance settings and controls should feel straightforward. You do not need to be an eBike expert to enjoy one, but you should be able to see key information, change assistance when needed and operate the bike without feeling like you are running a small spaceship.
If you can test ride, take your time. Start, stop, turn, try a small hill if available, and notice how the bike feels at low speed. A quick lap around a car park is useful, but a few extra minutes often reveal far more.
Match battery range to your real routine
Range is one of the first things people ask about, and fair enough. It is also one of the easiest figures to misunderstand. Your result changes with rider weight, hills, wind, tyre pressure, cargo, assistance level, riding style and the number of stop-start sections on your route.
Rather than chasing a headline number, build in breathing room. If your usual day involves a 20 km return ride, choose a battery setup that makes that trip comfortable without relying on perfect conditions. Extra range can mean less charging anxiety, more spontaneous detours and a bike that stays useful as your riding habits grow.

Before adding anything, consider the intended load and confirm the relevant bike and accessory limits. A beach towel and a loaf of bread are one thing. Regular groceries, a laptop, or family-related carrying needs require more careful planning. Do not assume an accessory suits every model or load simply because it looks like it will fit.
Comfort is equally practical. Wider tyres, suspension, saddle shape and riding posture can all influence how a bike handles rough paths and longer rides. More cushioning can be welcome on patchy roads, though it may not be essential for every smooth urban route. Focus on what your local streets are actually like, not just what looks good in a product photo.
Understand the version and local riding rules
This is a worthwhile conversation before you buy, particularly if you expect to ride on public roads, paths or shared spaces. Public-road requirements vary across Australia, so check the current eBike rules for your state or territory before choosing a bike for public use.

For online buyers, ask what arrives assembled, what tools or steps are involved, and what local servicing may look like after purchase. A clear setup process matters, especially if this is your first eBike. So does access to people who can answer a normal question without making you feel silly for asking it.
Read the warranty terms rather than relying on a vague promise. Know what is covered, how a claim is handled and who you contact if something goes wrong.

The best purchase is the one that removes friction from your day. Picture the first ordinary trip you will take on it, check that the bike makes that trip feel easy, and you will be much closer to a choice you will still be happy with six months down the track.
